Onshore pipeline technology has been largely unchanged for 75 years

Traditional Pipeline Construction Process

  • Conventional line pipe is manufactured in a plate mill, then finished in a pipe mill far from the construction site.
  • 12m pipe sections are shipped around the world followed by labour intensive manual welding operations
  • Bend stations are set up several times per km and camps catering for 300 workers are common

Individual Conventional Processes

  1. Iron Ore Material
  2. Plate Mill
  3. Pipe Mill
  4. Coating Yard
  5. Stringing
  6. Welding and AUT
  7. Field Jointing
  8. Burial
Traditional pipeline construction

Logistics and costs are becoming limiting factors for pipeline installation, particularly in remote onshore locations (e.g. desert or arctic)
